Hands-On Language Teaching (HOLT) 2022 Online Workshop – March 20th

The Okinawa chapter of the Japan Association for Language Teaching is pleased to announce our next event, the Hands-On Language Teaching (HOLT) 2022 online workshop!

The purpose of HOLT 2022 is to demonstrate activities that can be used, in sequence or independently, to help students take advantage of the many opportunities presented by online learning environments. Accommodating for new technologies can often be frustrating in the language classroom, particularly with learners who fear being exposed or who become apprehensive or panic at the thought of having to participate in person or through an online medium. Activities demonstrated at HOLT are predominantly group-based and aim to provide and help guide students towards rich language development.

HOLT will be held in an online format on Sunday, 20 March, 13:00-16:00 through Zoom. Attendees and participants who are members of JALT can join HOLT for free. The conference fee for non-JALT member attendees and participants is ¥1,000.

We invite presenters to hold “speed” workshops demonstrating activities that aim to improve learners’ language development through interactive and communicative tasks. Our goal is to build a repository of lesson plans/ideas that others can incorporate into their classes. The “speed” portion of the workshop is due to the 15-minute presentation format allotted to each presenter. In the spirit of HOLT, the remaining time for each session will allow non-presenting participants to ask questions and/or share their own ideas.

Submissions consisting of practical teaching ideas and hands-on activities will be collected until 13 March 2022 (23:59:59 JST). Up to eight submissions will be selected for inclusion in the program. We will try to cover a broad range of teaching ideas and contexts, so let us hear your ideas!

Presenters will be informed by 14 March 2022. Those selected will be printed in the event program and then shared online with OkiJALT members after the workshop, with your permission.

Each presenter will present for 15 minutes, as below:

  • Opening
  • Presenters #1-4 @ 15 min. each + discussion (45-60 min.)
  • Break (30 min.)
  • Presenters #5-8 @ 15 min. each + discussion (45-60 min.)
  • General discussion on teaching strategies and tips

The presentations will be followed by a short Ordinary General Meeting (OGM) of the Okinawa Chapter of JALT. Join us to see how you can get more involved and find out about opportunities that JALT provides its members.
